"The battle for sustainable development will be won or lost in cities”, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon underlined at the opening of Habitat III. It emphasizes the increasingly important role of cities as front runners for sustainable development globally. A New Urban Agenda will therefore have to be implemented in relation to the 2030 Agenda, and particularly to SDG11.
Nordic systems for leadership, governance and management for sustainable urban development will be discussed based on the report Nordic Urban Ways. In the study Global Utmaning, together with UN-Habitat, explore and demonstrate how Nordic urban development can serve as models for other cities in a global context.
The third United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development - Habitat III - took place in Quito, Ecuador, 17 - 20 October. It resulted in the adoption of a New Urban Agenda by the United Nations member states. This agenda will be the guideline for sustainable urban development for the next generation. The starting point for discussion is how global agendas and goals can serve as a support in the transition to urban sustainability.
The conference will result in a nordic declaration on the implementation of the New Urban Agenda, drafted by a group of rapporteurs throughout the day with the active participation of Nordic national and local government, administration, research, private sector and civil society.
The declaration is available here
